NorthPointe Triathlon attracts two family teams

Some families gather for picnics, birthdays or graduations. The Anderson family of Caledonia, prefers the family togetherness of a triathlon. NorthPointe’s Prairie Triathlon in June attracted about 140 participants – many competing as individuals and others preferring the option of a three-person team.

One team boasted both the youngest and oldest participants in the event. Bicyclist, Kate Anderson competed with her father, swimmer Chet Otis, 81; and her son, runner Noah Anderson, 9, as the “Otis Team.”

Not to be outdone, Kate’s bicyclist husband Rob Anderson, his father, runner Arne Anderson, 70; and Rob and Kate’s swimming daughter Maggie, 11, registered as the “Anderson Team.”

“This was our first triathlon together,” explains Kate. “However, we have all competed in various swim meets, marathons and, triathlons individually over many years. In fact, my 81-year-old Dad is quite a swimmer and qualified as an alternate for the 1950 Olympics.” Chet Otis also is a Beloit College alumnus where he was a hall of fame swimmer.

Both of the youngest team members passed up their family opponents during their portions of the triathlon, beaming with pride. When Noah started the final running leg of his team, every spectator’s jaw dropped in astonishment. “He took off like a bolt of lightning with strides as long as an NBA player. There were no signs of slowing down,” expressed one bystander.

“We have had so much fun as a family exercising together and training to compete,” Kate adds. “We’re really not fanatics, just a busy family who thinks fitness is fun. I think we’re hooked now.” Maggie and Noah have two younger siblings, ages 5 and 4. And you guessed it, they love to participate, as well. There is a summer kids triathlon in Monroe, Wis., where all four Anderson children will compete (the length is adjusted for the younger participants).

Of course, the question you all are asking is … “OK, which family team won?” Well, the answer is, it’s not about the winning, but about the experience. Especially when the family all comes together – some competing while the others cheer for support. But if you must know, the Otis team edged out the Anderson team by a nose. We’ll see what happens next year.
