Fact or Fiction?
- Your risk for melanoma doubles if you’ve had five or more sunburns in your lifetime. Fact. Sunburns can cause many skin cancers including basal cell, squamous cell and melanoma. This is why regular application of sunscreen is important for all skin types.
- Waterproof sunscreen will stay on your skin as long as you don’t get it wet. Fiction. Water-proof and water-resistant sunscreens can maintain their SPF levels longer than others, however, no sunscreen will protect you without continual reapplication. You should apply sunscreen liberally every two hours. Don’t forget your lips, ears, hands, feet, neck and scalp.
- Sunscreens have a maximum shelf life of three years. Fact. According to the Food and Drug Administration, all sunscreens have to be stable at their original strength for at least three years. They lose their effectiveness after three years, especially when the bottle is left open or exposed to direct sunlight or extreme changes in temperature.
- Applying anti-wrinkle creams is the best way to help prevent aging skin. Fiction. Sunscreen and sun protection are more effective at delaying the onset of aging.
